…There shall be no conditions or requirements added to the form or content of the application, or required by the licensing authority for the issuance of a permit or identification card, other than those that are specifically set forth in this chapter.

Numerous police departments violate this statute as a matter of policy. We have seen additional forms – some of which have nothing to do with firearms – that include bogus requirements such as obtaining a spouse’s permission to purchase a firearm and notarizing reference letters.

Some of us have had our employers contacted. A student with no criminal record – seeking an FID card – was summoned by the Dean after their college was contacted and had to explain why they wanted an FID card. To make matters worse, the student wasn’t even living on campus. 

Those are just a few examples of false requirements – that have not been “specifically set forth” as required by law – which lead to the harassment of private, law-abiding citizens.

NJ2AS believes enough is enough, and for the past several months we’ve been collecting data, speaking to attorneys and searching for potential plaintiffs as we plan our course of action. In the past we have contacted several municipal police departments and gave them a fair opportunity to correct unlawful practices. Some have complied, but some have chosen to ignore the law.

Let this be considered an official warning to those who decided not to comply – NJ2AS will pursue any and all legal actions, including criminal charges, against any government official that thinks they’re above the law. We will be as merciless as the prosecutors who’ve destroyed the lives of honest citizens incidentally out of compliance with New Jersey’s draconian gun laws.
